B-CORP® OFFERS NEW PLANT-BASED DISTINCTION FOR ANIMAL-CONSIDERATE COMPANIES / {Certification}
B-Lab® would offer companies a new plant-based or “PB-Corp” distinction if they also meet certain plant-based requirements (in addition to existing B-Corp® standards criteria). Most of us are somewhat familiar with what a B-Corp or “Benefit Corporation” is all about. It’s a prestigious (and spendy) distinction for companies that meet certain “environmental and social impact standards,” and acts as a highly regarded “badge” that qualified companies tout to earn consumer and investor respect. It’s great, we’re fans, and hey, who wouldn’t be? However, if one looks into the B-Impact Assessment standards that a company must meet in order to become a B-Corp, there’s very little encouraging companies to limit the use of animals in supply chains and/or employee lifestyles. We understand why, it’s not easy to eliminate animal products in this crazy world we made. Plus, it’s extra tricky to suggest that employees behave a certain way. But aren’t the animals worth it? Isn’t the planet? We believe such challenges are worth facing and overcoming in order to signal to the world that your ethics go beyond the human species, and your environmental standards don’t overlook the impact of meat-crazy population demands. Imagine it. The new “PB Corp” distinction would prove to the world that you are a company that also takes measures to eliminate (or drastically reduce) animals from your supply chain, and guarantee that at least 50% of your employees are plant-based or vegan. The standards and criteria details would obviously be worked out with B-Corp, but it’s an idea that gives B-Corp a fresh distinction that establishes their entity as one that is focused on animal welfare as well social and environmental impact.
